Biographical Sketch

Lucy Belle Claybourn was born 20 May 1867, at Texico, Illinois. She received her education in the schools of Jefferson County. On 4 March 1885, she was married to Edgar Eugene Norfleet, born 3 February 1861, at Clarkesville, Tennessee. He attended the University of Illinois and was a teacher.

In 1898 they moved to Texas where Ed taught in the elementary schools of east Texas. In 1900 he began working for the Houston Post. In 1905 they settled in Houston where he continued to work for the Houston Post. After he retired, he operated a small grocery store near a school where children bought lunches, candy and school supplies.

Belle was small like most of the Claybourns, being only five feet, one inch in height. She had blonde hair and blue eyes. Ed was five feet, ten inches, and in his prime weighed two hundred pounds. They had eleven children, all listed below.

Ed died on the 1st of December in 1946 and Lucy followed on the 21st of April in 1949. Both are buried at the Hollywood Cemetery in Houston, Texas.

Descendants

  1. Harold Cecil Norfleet was born 17 December 1885 in Dix, Illinois. He worked for the Interstate Amusement Company and lived in Dallas, Texas, and Los Angeles, California. He originated the idea of a "This is Your Life" program on the radio. He was married and divorced with no children. He died on 9 July 1955 and is buried in the Hollywood Cemetery in Houston, Texas.

  2. Guy Raymond Norfleet was born 17 AUgust 1887 in Dix, Illinois. He lived at 117 North Ninth Street in Temple, Texas. He married (1st) on 4 May 1911 to Leona Le Clair, who died in childbirth in 1911. They had one child:
    1. Nona Norfleet was born 1911 and lived in Houston, Texas. She married W.F. Arnold and they adopted two children: Betty Arnold and Billy Arnold
    Guy married (2nd) Peggy Norfleet (no relation) on 12 March 1913 at Fort Smith, Arkansas. They adopted a child, Guy Raymond Norfleet, Jr., who was born 4 July 1927. Guy Jr. lived in New Orleans and worked for Humble Oil Co., is married and has two daughters.

  3. George Wilmot Norfleet was born 20 September 1889 in Dix, Illinois. He lived in Houston and was a cotton buyer most of his adult life. He married on 29 November 1923 to Lucyle Henry (born 12 September 1887 in Troup, Texas). George died on 16 July 1950 and is buried at Forest Park Cemetery, Houston. After his death Lucyle lived at 1512 North Dixie, Tyler, Texas. They had one children:
    1. Betty Lou Norfleet was born 13 January 1925 in Houston, Texas. She married on 1 February 1951 to her third cousin Henry Marshall Claybourn (born 16 April 1925 in Elk City, Oklahoma), the son of Guy Raymond Claybourn. Henry served in the Korean conflict. He received a B.S. degree from the University of Houston in 1951 and an M.S. degree from Mississippi State University in 1959 in mechanical engineering. Thereafter he worked as an aerodynamicist and utility pilot for Cessna Aircraft. He lived at 8034 Levitt, Wichita, Kansas.

      2. Celia Kay Claybourn ("Kay") was born in November of 1959. She did post-graduate work at Texas A&M University.
      3. John Norfleet Claybourn.

  4. Gladys Norfleet was born 10 April 1891 in Dix, Illinois. She married on 22 May 1912 to Harry B. Jewett (born 15 December 1888) in Bismark, North Dakota. They lived at 2318 Glenhaven, Houston. Harry owned a Men's Haberdashery Shop and retired in 1955. They had two children:
    1. Dorothy Gladys Jewett was born 4 September 1914 in Houston, Texas. She married Wilson Stitt (born 25 April 1914). Wilson was an advertising manager for the Dixie Cup Company. They lived at 110 Upper Shawnee Easton, Pennsylvania. They had two children:
      1. James Harry Stitt was born 13 December 1939 in Lansdale, Pa. He attended the Rice Institute in Houston
      2. Thomas Paul Stitt was born 2 October 1943 in Lansdale, Pa. and attended high school in Easton, Pa.
    2. Harry B. Jewett, Jr. was born 17 APril 1918 in Houston, Texas. He served in the Army Air Force from 1943-1945 and lived in Houston, Texas. He married on 16 November, 1938 to Mary Louise Jones (born 8 November 1918 in Houston, Texas). They had five children:
      1. Harry Berky Jewett III, born 20 May 1940. He began studies at Texas A&M in the fall of 1959
      2. Margaret Ann Jewett was born 17 November 1943
      3. Katherine Louise Jewett was born 24 June 1949
      4. Charles Edgar Jewett was born 4 June 1952
      5. Douglas Eugene Jewett was born 14 August 1957

  5. Eva N. Norfleet was born 10 July 1893 and died shortly after on 25 September 1893

  6. Pearley Horace Norfleet was born 4 October 1894. He died on 17 August 1913 by drowning while swimming with a group of boys.

  7. Eula Norfleet was born 8 June 1896 but died soon after on 1 November 1896. Eula is buried at Jordan's Chapel in Jefferson County, Illinois with her twin Beulah.

  8. Beulah Norfleet was born 8 June 1896 but died soon after on 1 November 1896. Beulah is buried at Jordan's Chapel in Jefferson County, Illinois with her twin Eula.

  9. Jewell Norfleet was born 21 October 1898 and nearly a month later on 30 November 1899. She is buried in Glendale, Texas.

  10. Ruby Norfleet was born 15 January 1900 and died nearly six months later on 7 June 1900.

  11. Eugene Divine Norfleet was born 28 May 1904 and died within a few months on 2 July 1904
